Yesterday someone relieved me of my 64GB iPod Touch. That’s an ouch to the tune of about $500 once you get done buying insurance. Ironically, it wasn’t theft insurance.

Insomuch as I can say that getting ripped off was my fault, I probably shouldn’t have left it in the console of my rental car and I probably should have made double-sure that I was pushing the right ‘lock’ button on the keys. It wasn’t until the next day that Ivy and I realized we were short one pair of glasses and one iPod Touch.

I’ve always been a fan of using the right tool for the job. And if it makes sense, multiple tools. Rather than have one device that does a dozen different things, I prefer to have a specific device for each task when it makes sense. Why? Because when some jackwagon steals it or I drop it or leave it in an airport I’m only technically crippled by a bit until I can either buy another one or get it replaced with insurance.

There are only so many devices I can keep track of on my person and since losing a buhbillion pounds I’ve found that clothes that actually fit well enough to complement my body don’t have a lot of extra room for crap in the pockets. My cell phone is the main one. My wallet is the other.

My camera is a $99 Nikon Coolpix. I love that thing but with the included 2GB SD card I won’t cry if I drop it or someone with sticky fingers walks away with it. My voice recorder is another specialized device a touch under $100. I had no business getting a 64GB iPod Touch. I only have, what? 20 songs with choreography memorized? Double that – no, triple it – and I still only needed about 300MB worth of space. Less than 1% of what I bought. Hrmph.

What devices do you carry with you? While we’re at it, let’s make it a “What’s In Your Bag” event. Break out your backpack, purse, whatever, spread it all over the bed and take a picture. How much of it is insured?
