The Geekery

My good friend Jon Angliss writes about systems administration, programming, and whatever other tidbits he thinks might be tasty over at The Geekery. As I went through my feed today I read his latest article on maintenance windows and communicating your times. If he’s not in your RSS feeds yet, he should be.

Everyone has had a bad experience as a customer. Maybe your waiter had an attitude. Maybe you stayed in a hotel with really bad internet. Maybe you kept getting the run-around when you called tech support and only after finally fighting to get to the 3rd level did you actually make any progress. The question [...]

These Midland GXT1050 2-way radios had been on my Amazon wish list for a while. I don’t have any particular reason to have them, but I remember having those little walkie-talkies when I was a kid and figured I needed the adult equivalent. Looking at the other things right around that entry in my wishlist [...]

I was at a Zumba class yesterday and chatting with the only other guy there. He was asking about my routine, how many calories I eat, how many I burn, etc. When I mentioned weight lifting as a contributor to weight loss he sort of raised an eyebrow and said, “That helps, huh?” I’ve read [...]

On the way into work this morning I stopped at a mini mart for something to drink. At the counter I looked for those 5 hour energy shots. It turned out they were behind the counter. As the kid helping me goes for a couple the older guy next to him chimes in. “We have [...]

Cancer. Ugh, could I write about anything darker? It’s touched my life a handful of times and so far the results haven’t been great. Today is a different. Today, my good friend Sarah fought and beat cancer. I met Sarah (@strongsarah) on twitter a long while ago. I can’t remember if it was by way [...]

I thank Jon Angliss (@j_angliss) for my only physical activity beyond changing out the laundry today. We started talking about his latest geeky interest: geocaching. I must have been interested in geocaching at some point because when I hit the geocaching.com site the ‘mrxinu’ user was already registered. I retrieved my password and checked around my house [...]

For every personal strength there exists a corresponding potential for weakness. ~ Me It sounds defeatist, right? That was the only explanation I could come up with at the time. If I was being duped into doing things I didn’t want to do, then obviously it was because something I was doing right was being [...]

Shortest Path

I think of this xkcd.com cartoon every time I walk to work. I think I made a half dozen minor adjustments on my walk from the hotel to the customer in the last two weeks. The only way to improve at this point is to blend in some jaywalking.

I Was Cold Once

It was a job in Philadelphia. I was so cold I was convinced that I was going to lose the feeling in the tip of my nose permanently. The temperature was 19 degrees. Fast forward 10 months to this morning. The rental car dutifully reported that the temperature was 2 degrees. No problem, right? I [...]
